Every man and woman in Illinois who wish to marry
must first secure a marriage license from the county clerk in
the county where the ceremony will take place. Both bride and groom
must appear together with identifying information such as a driver’s
license or state ID for each.
If either one of you was previously
married, you must bring a copy of the death certificate, divorce
decree, or annulment papers with a translation when the papers
come from a foreign country in a language other than English. Non-citizens
must bring a passport, visa, or green card.
The license expires after 60 days. The license will not be valid
the first day following issuance due to a mandatory “cooling
off” period.
You must therefore consider the timing.
The license must accurately show all of the couple’s names.
By law, I cannot make corrections at the wedding. Make
sure you double check the accuracy of your license when you receive
it at the clerk’s office counter.
The fee is subject to change by law. For a fee, the Clerk will
provide certified copies after the wedding when either party makes
application. I advise you to get at least one original and two
or more copies for use in name changes, social security benefits,
insurance coverage, citizenship, etc.
